It looks like a housing relief bill is one step closer to the President's desk, where it will likely get vetoed.

Regardless of what one thinks regarding governmental bail-outs, it strikes me as inconsistent that it seems socially responsible to require tax payers to foot the bill to rebuild New Orleans, yet it's not as popular to provide assistance to drowning homeowners elsewhere in the country. Sure, differences in the situations exist, but the underlying fundamentals are the same: people made a choice that led them to their respective outcomes. Both ended up in over their collective heads.

My gut leads me to concluding that neither should be bailed out. I'm just pointing out the inconsistency, G-Dub.

Nice place you got here, Jeff.

What decisions did the homeowners in New Orleans make that makes them responsible for a an act of weather of biblical proportions? I’m thinking that local officials who failed to heed the lay of the land are more to blame than everyday peeps. ???

I knew I’d be clarifying that eventually.

I’m speaking generally of those who originally chose to inhabit a location below sea level, not so much the generations who came after.  But those who stay and rebuild may be fair game some day for the blame if they don’t do it differently this time around.

Of course, these days, they, too, could be blamed for the act formerly-known-as-Biblical, you know, with global warming, and all…

I think we’re probably on the same page.

(And Richard Mize just said “Peeps”, yo!)
